What is your favorite organic or natural soap store online?

I love Soaptopia! — http://soaptopia.com/soaps

They have all natural soap with some organic ingredients and most products are vegan. They have lots of delicious flavors including unscented Plain Jane soap. And even though they are full of natural fragrances and essential oils they are not overwhelming. I like the citrus ones the best. The soaps all have fun names and a neat combination of ingredients. And they are beautiful!

I never used to get into fancy soaps, but since I started using these my skin feels so much better – never dry. And starting the day with natural soap and incredible delicious smells just makes everything a little better.

I also love giving Soaptopia for gifts because it is something anyone can use and they can feel pampered and happy. And even though it is a little pricey to buy for everyday, it is not very expensive for a gift.

I love natural soap and would like to begin making my own. Please give helpful books, recipes, tips & tricks?

Thank you. Any and all information would help from how to begin with my first batch to ideas for safety. And can I do this in an apartment in a medium sized kitchen? Not a house?

by natural soap, i’m assuming that you want to make soap using your choice of oils and lye – not the melt and pour kind. I don’t have any good books to recommend, but i can recommend a comprehensive website that can answer many of your questions. Such as what you’ll need, recipies, safety, where to find ingredients ect. – http://www.millersoap.com Can you make soap in a medium sized kitchen in an apartment and yes you can as long as you have a kitchen stove, sink, a little counter space and a window nearby for good ventalation I don’t see why not. I just taught a soap class in a small recreation kitchen and the class members were able to make a batch of soap.

here is what i asked them to bring:
- 3 quart stainless steel or enamal pot/sauce pan – NO ALUMINUM
-1 quart (4 cup) heat proof Pyrex measuring cup
-meat thermometer
-Rubber spatula, plastic spoon, paper cup
-hot pads
-rubber/plastic gloves, dust mask, and safety goggles
-stick blender
-digital scale that measures in ounces and pounds
-freezer paper for lining molds
-molds – 8 x 8 plastic container, several pringles cans or any container mold that can hold 2 1/2 quarts of liquid
-box and towels that will accomdate molds to insulate soap for 12-24 hours before it can be unmolded and cut

they used the following recipe to make thier first batch of soap

21 ounces of Veg. Shortening (1 lb 5 oz)
9 ounces of Coconut Oil
12 ounces of Canola Oil

14 ounces of cold water
6 ounces of lye crystals (sodium hydroxide)

1st turn on scale place pyrex measuring cup on scale – tare measuring cup (weigh cup set to zero), then measure out 14 ouces of water, set aside – (it is recommend that you wear the rubber gloves, mask and goggles when handling the lye and lye water mixture) measure out lye crystals in paper cup using spoon to place crystals in cup – this is done on the scale as well. Mix together lye and water in a well ventalited area, until lye crystal are completely disolved, set aside.
Weigh pot, tare – weigh out shortening (1 lb 5 oz.) tare, measure out 9 ounces of coconut oil. Place on stove and melt oils together, take of the heat set hot pad on scale, tare and add 12 ounces of Canola Oil. While oils and lye mixture are cooling to desired tempeture of 110 degrees line your molds with freezer paper – wax side up (this can be done ahead of time if you wish) When both the lye mixture and oils have reache 110 degrees slowly add lye mixture to oil mixture using your stick blender to mix with. Mix until mixture is the consitency of pudding (trace – a line is left when you move the mixer around in the mixture) Pour into lined molds (don’t need to line pringles cans – just make sure they are clean and dry) place in box and wrap towels around mold. Cover and leave for 12 to 24 hours – unmold and cut desires size.

you may be able to find lye in your local hardware store in the drain cleaner isle – look for crystal drain cleaner (100% sodium hydroxide)

good luck

Where to get natural colouring for soap making?

Hello,

Could you please advise on where in the UK one could get natural colouring agents for making soap?

Many thanks!

Your kitchen will have many different natural soap colorants in it right now.

Carrots, dill, beer, tea, honey, cinnamon, citrus peel, cocoa powder, turmeric, coffee, milk (cow, goat, coconut), oatmeal, parsley, paprika, tomato paste….

Here is a link to a page that shows how to use them:

Other ingredients include annato seeds, stinging nettles powder, comfrey leaf powder, rattanjot powder, clays, indigo root powder, alkanet powder….

This link has a list of UK soapmaking suppliers – each carries a different variety of these items.
