I want to make my own handmade soap. Anyone experienced and willing to share how to’s??
I am scared to hanlde the lye. I am also kind of clutzy. And I do have little ones in the house. But I do want to make that soap!! Please someone tell me all about it. And where do I get lye anyway??
I make soap and bath salts quite often.
Go to a craft store and buy the blocks of soap. Not Dial or anything like that, but actual glycerine soap. It comes in different colors. Then pick out a mold that you would like to use for your soap.. this is also sold at the craft store. And lastly, pick out fragrance oils that you like.
Cut up the glycerine soap block into small chunks and put in a pot and heat until it has liquified. Add your fragrance oils to create a scent that you like. You can mix different colored soaps to create a unique color of your own.
When you’ve got the perfect color and scent, pour the liquified soap into your mold. Let it cool and then you’re done!
A really unique soap I make is a watermelon slice. I have a mold that looks like half of a cylindrical object. I heat greeen soap first and coat the mold in a thick layer. Then I heat up red soap and fill up the rest of the mold with it. When it has dried, I slice it into little watermelon slices. I always wrap my soaps in plastic wrap to keep the scent fresh.
If you want to make bath salts, just take 2 parts epsom salts and 1 part table salt and mix them together in a bowl. Add food coloring or dye to create your desired color and then add fragrance oils to create a scent. Then let it dry and put in a decorative jar.
Hope you enjoy!

did you ever use a natural handmade soap bar?
do you like them? wich brand?
Why do you want to use bar soap? If you are the one cleaning your shower, I would reconsider. Bar soap scums up showers and tubs 20 times faster than body wash. And it is also much more drying than body wash, no matter what it is made with. I thought I would really like a bar I picked up at a Renaissance festival until I realized what a pain it was to clean my bathroom. Stick with body wash.

Do I need a license to sell my handmade soap at the farmers market?
I make CP and Mp soap and I’d like to sell it at our local farmer’s market this season. Does anyone know if I need a business license for this? I live in Arkansas.
Thanks!!
In Ohio you do not need any licensing to sell soap at farmers markets but to be sure contact the market manager who runs the farmers market where you plan on selling soap. He or she will know the answer to this question. If the market has no manager find another market as it will not be well run and you will not be able to reach your full market potential.
Can I make a good handmade soap without coconut & palm oils?
I am trying my hand at making cold process soap. I am using Soybean and Olive oils. The bars are not really getting as hard as I wanted and they still feel a little greasy. What am I doing wrong?
It’s probably not the type of oil you are using at all. You need to double check your soap recipe again and make sure that you used the exact amounts of lye and oil and water called for (check a lye calculator also to make sure the amount listed in the recipe seems right.)
Recheck your scales too. Did you make sure to set them back to zero when you put the your containers holding your lye, etc.? This is an easy mistake to make–and I have!
Did you let your lye solution cool down to 100 F before you added your oils which should have been at the same temperature? Two thermometers is helpful.
Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat and they take a lot longer to reach trace than other oils. Are you sure that your mix actually reached trace? You can remelt it and try again if it just doesn’t harden, although the texture might be a little different. Just grate it and melt it in a crockpot. If you realized that your lye calculation was a bit short at this time, dissolve it into a little bit of cold water first. Of course, allow it to cool down before adding. Make sure to stir the batch once in a while during the remelting.
Lastly, the soap will continue to harden as it cures, Give it at least two weeks before you call the batch a failure. Keep trying and you’ll get the hang of it!
