I’m thinking of starting a candle making business with my dad, how much supplies would I need to buy?
We came up with the idea a while back and have been studying and researching the art for about 2 weeks now. How much candle wax would we need for starting out to test our product and how much candle wax would we need for our final product to sell? Also how much wick would we need for a bunch of candles in bulk?
Start small and replenish when needed. Going overboard in purchases and low or no sales. Could leave you with candle supplies for years.
Where can I find primitive/country unfinished wood furniture and home decor wholesale?
I am trying to start my own company by painting prim/country wood decor and furniture and reselling it at craft shows and little craft stores around Ohio but don’t know where to get the basics for my business. I will also be making my own candles so if anyone has any wholesale info on candle making supplies and acrylic paint that would be great!
I do not know where you live but I have lived in the chicago area and in houston and there are always local Amish stores, you could go speak to them about buying in bulk and getting a good price.
Family Owned Beekeeping Businesses – 3 Keys To Success
1. Beekeeping supplies
Companies that have beekeeping stuff deal with all the equipment that is required for this business, like attire for bee keeping which is essential from head to torso, full body suits and just head gear. Along with this equipment they also sell journals and books on beekeeping to help people to understand this field better. Some of the better known beekeeping companies have been in the business for more than a hundred years.
2. Books for providing short courses in beekeeping
Beekeeping families have a lot of subsidiaries to the beekeeping business too. They use the bees wax to make candles and collect honey which is sold locally in the stores. The books have information on candle making and collecting honey too apart from instructions on the main business which is bee keeping. These family businesses are mostly long standing ones and continue from one generation to the other.
3. Businesses have advanced technologically
Stepping into the shoes of their ancestors has not been easy for many of the families. Only those families where the parents thought of the new technologies and got their business mechanized with the latest equipment, and advertised with on the internet with their own websites so that they could bring in more customers and higher profits, was the business profitable and worth running. For others the cost of maintaining an old business was too high and they could not handle the expenses anymore. As most descendants of beekeeping families knew no other business they preferred to stick to it, and if the financial situation was not good, then they became commercially owned businesses
A business that once started as a hobby, with just about enough honey to put on toast and biscuits in place of marmalade, became a big time business with the popularity of the use of honey. Earlier honey was not a very popular edible thing as people used sugar and molasses for sweetening their food, but once they found that honey was much cheaper, beekeeping became popular and was taken up by many as an agricultural business. However, now the only problem is that people worry about the safety of the honey that is collected because of all the pesticides that are used. Now with organic foods being more popular and a movement by organic food growers, there is a lot of honey that is free of pesticides. Now many families owned companies supply bees wax for candle making and cosmetics to other manufacturers of these commodities.

How do you stop a candle from putting off black smoke? Is it the wick?
I have never had a problem with the candles I make untill I moved to alabama. My candle supplies set in storage for a year. Now that I am making them again some of them are putting off a thick smoke from the wick. Is the wax? Is the fragrance oil bad? or is the wick?
I’m a consultant for Party Lite and the BEST way to prevent black smoke is to use soy based wax products and wicks without lead in them. Thats what causes the black smoke, also, make sure to cut the wick. The only candles you shouldnt cut the wick for are 3 wicks and tea lights. But remember…soy wax and lead free wicks!

Candle making a good business?
I want to start making candles and other items like Lotions soaps and bath beads etc. Would this be a great business to start or is this a dead end? Where can I find supplies cheap? I already make candles for myself and I know about aromatherapy from massage school.
I think this would be a good business start up. It could also be a good side to your massage business.
Candles, lotions, soaps etc are good sellers. All of us wants some luxury in our ordinary humdrum lives. Scented stuff gives us the tiny luxury we crave.
Get an assortment made up and set up a small shop and go to all the faires and festivals you can get to with business cards, brochures, and a good website. It may not pay off in the immediate future, but will eventually. People keep thinking of the very pleasant person they got that candle or soap from and start looking for your card in their clutter.
I have a small yarn business. Handspun wools and mohairs and blends. It is finally beginning to pay for itself. but mine are total luxury items!
Getting Started on Etsy
Have you been looking for a way to sell your handmade goods online? Do you currently have a business website but long for more traffic and a larger customer base? If so, Etsy may be the answer. Etsy is an online marketplace dedicated to handmade products.
Opened in June, 2005, Etsy now represents more than 100,000 artisans from around the world – each artisan selling their handmade goods, crafting supplies, or vintage items with their own Etsy store.
Why Sell on Etsy?
·Etsy store owners receive their own customizable store, a URL to link to and drive visitors to, and an abundance of marketing tools and resources to build awareness and of course profits.
·Etsy is easy for both buyers and sellers to utilize. Store owners can customize their shops without the need for programming skills or knowledge. PayPal is the payment processor of choice so payment and fulfillment are easy for both customer and buyer. Etsy also offers sellers several pages including policies, profile, favorites, feedback and a custom request form so you can set your store apart from the others.
·Getting started is free! Much like eBay, Etsy makes money by charging a small listing fee and a 3.5% sales fee.
Your First Step to Selling on Etsy
Step one for selling on Etsy is to register for a seller account. This requires you to provide the typical information which will include your name, address and such but will also include adding a credit card to your account. There is no charge to sign up however your credit card will be used to pay for your listing and transaction fees and is therefore a requirement to signing up as a seller.
Make sure when registering your username that it accurately represents you. Your username will be your URL. For example, yourusername.etsy.com. If your username is difficult to remember, type, or doesn’t relate to you or your business, it will be more difficult for customers to find you.
Making the Most of your Etsy Store
There are simple strategies and tips to follow to make your Etsy store as successful as possible. These tips and strategies include:
· Generate positive feedback. Like the feedback system on eBay, Etsy provides buyers the opportunity to leave positive, or negative, feedback. The better your feedback rating, the more confident customers will be to do business with you.
· Do your research. Spend some time finding out what other sellers, especially your competition, are doing on Etsy. How much are they charging? What payment options and procedures do they utilize? What can you do better to both attract and keep customers?
· A picture is worth a thousand words. Would you buy a sweater, candle or piece of jewelry without knowing what it looks like? Probably not and your customers won’t either. Take good pictures of your items, from all angles, and show your customer how wonderful your products are.
· Describe your products accurately. A detailed product description will help sell it and if you happen to have a knack for creative and entertaining catalog copy then by all means use it. Share your item’s story, engage your customer, and make them want to share the experience by buying your products.
· Categorize and tag your products. Etsy offers tagging features and categories. Utilize these features to make finding you and your products as easy as possible for your potential customers.
Whether you’re selling vintage clothing, crafting supplies, or one of a kind homemade items Etsy is the place to sell them. Their continued growth rate, ease of use, and highly targeted audience make it an ideal place to sell your wares and grow your business.
